The Secret?
Sunday, February 18, 2007
Today a friend from church drew my attention to this episode of the Oprah Winfrey show. Her question was in how this related to Christianity. I briefly checked it out and the basic philosophy behind "The Secret" immediately brought up red flags for me. I am checking it out more thoroughly to get my thoughts in order and measure "The Secret" up against scripture.

While I'm still sorting it out, I'm curious to know if any of you have heard of this, or saw the Oprah show, and what your opinions are.

A Christian friend of mine just mentioned this past week that she was reading it and talked about how great it was. When I looked it up on Amazon, I immediately got a bad feeling about it. I agree with the general premise but I'm not sure about the method. I'm interested to see your review of it.

Someone was trying to explain this to my husband and me a couple weeks ago. I have not read it, but what I heard from this kid did not line up with scripture. I am interested in your take on it, though.

Sorry to hijack, but big red flags for me is that the Bible is not metaphor... Jesus is not merely a teacher... And our minds are not a bridge between the "two most powerful forces in the universe"-- there is only one most powerful force in the universe.

I agree with the other commenters. I looked up one of the authors and he is indeed not a Christian "Rev." But a trans-denominational new age-ancient wisdom type person.

After just the short amount of research I've done, this is not a book I will fill my mind with. This has the work of the "angel of light" all over it.

Christine, I'm familar with the concept and consider the basic approach to be entirely metaphysical. While some people are attempting to make connections to an approach consistent with Christianity...it's not just a stretch but a lie in my book... :)

Christine, last comment on this i promise. I have started a look at this over on my blog, so feel free to read further thoughts there.

Blessings, and many thanks for calling this out.

Oh I have so been hoping someone would discuss this on their blog. I saw the show and it really puzzled me. My feeling about it is that the "secret" is simply what Christians have always known through the word of God. I think people so want something to grasp onto and the "secret" points them in the direction of the "universe". The thing that really stood out for me in the show was these poor souls who are leading such desperate lives and all they really need is Jesus and they don't even know it! Oprah did touch on how the "secret" connected with Christianity but I didn't really get her explaination.

I'm not very good at writing my jumbled up thoughts onto paper so I look forward to seeing what others have to say.

Okay my thoughts. I know alot of christian women don't like oprah. I like her in moderation. Her shows on health, saving kids in Africa, etc are interesting to me. But the other half of her shows are not.

Recently I had some Christian women I really admire tell me Oprah is like the new-age prophetess and I need to stay away from her. I thought they were just ruining my party.

Well, I saw the first 5 minutes of the Secret show and was so heebie-jeebied out....I could almost feel a presence of evil in the first five minutes! I turned it off and have not watched her since. It really creeped me out.

The sad thing is that it is a concept all about people "finding themselves, their passions, their reason for living" and it has NOTHING to do with Jesus. Nothing. And people are falling all over it. It is humanism at its best.

So, I have given up Oprah for at least now. I was way creeped out! I look forward to hearing your thoughts!!!

It seems this has been on people's minds lately. All the more reason use the concrete measure of scripture to analyze it! Karlanee, I'll check out the link and Kelly, I'll be reading your take on it today! Thanks everyone, I'll be posting later.

I watched it as well. They did a total of two shows on the topic and I spent some time on the website. As a Catholic Christian, I found it useless to read and at times creepy. It certainly is a new-age type movement that in my opinion should not be "looked to" by Christians. Christ is sufficient for us.

Hebrews 11:6 says we cannot please God without faith; and whoever comes to God must believe He is (examine that word in light of Exodus 3:14,15 and John 8:58) and that He is the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

In John 4 Jesus chided the woman at the well, “You worship what you do not know…the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship Him (vs. 22-24).”

We are commanded to “cast down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ…(2 Cor. 10:4-6).”

9But He said to me, My grace (My favor and loving-kindness and mercy) is enough for you [sufficient against any danger and enables you to bear the trouble manfully]; for My strength and power are made perfect (fulfilled and completed) and [a]show themselves most effective in [your] weakness. Therefore, I will all the more gladly glory in my weaknesses and infirmities, that the strength and power of Christ (the Messiah) may rest (yes, may [b]pitch a tent over and dwell) upon me! (2 Cor 12:9)

We have to remember that All Truth is God's Truth. So this "secret" message looks attractive to many, because the guy really does hit on some biblical principles. But, to me his message is deceiving and has a "name it and claim it" ring to it, which is so dangerous.

I'm not an Oprah fan at all. I'm reading Beth Moore's new "Pit" book and WOW! God's scriptures are where it is at for me!

Good for you for taking this on!
Happy Monday!

Hey Christine...this show has been on my mind all weekend as well.....it's really disturbing to me how people are just grabbing the concept of the secret without doing any homework on it at all.....our society is just hungry for the truth and so they take anything that remotely even comes close to the truth......and they grab on.....We as Christians know the truth.....are we sharing it enough if there are this many people listening to Oprah? That's my question.....

Christine
I *did* see this show--(one of the few shows I have seen this year) I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that is was simply a bunch of "mumbo jumbo". "My truth can be your truth and if you don't like my truth then you can make up your own truth..." And on and on--
What is saddening is that so many women use Oprah as their "gospel" and this "Secret" is appealing to them, but it is all a bunch of mumbo jumbo stuff like I said.

I saw the show also and I agree with the other bloggers...it's just not right. When they said that there would be no "judgement",
That sealed it for me. Some of the key phrases sound really good, and if used in the context of Christianity, they would be. I am so sorry so many people will be fooled. Anxious to read more comments about this.
